GUIDE TO THE SCRIPTURES REPENT, REPENTANCE See also Atone, Atonement; Broken Heart; Confess, Confession; Forgive; Jesus Christ; Remission of Sins A change of mind and heart that brings a fresh attitude toward God, oneself, and life in general. Repentance implies that a person turns away from evil and turns his heart and will to God, submitting to God’s commandments and desires and forsaking sin. True repentance comes from a love for God and a sincere desire to obey his commandments. All accountable persons have sinned and must repent in order to progress toward salvation. Only through the atonement of Jesus Christ can our repentance become effective and accepted by God. Make confession unto the Lord, Ezra 10: 11. Put away the evil of your doings; cease to do evil, Isa. 1: 16. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, Ezek. 18: 30-31. Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, Matt. 3: 2. There is joy in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, Luke 15: 7. God commandeth all men every where to repent, Acts 17: 30 (2 Ne. 9: 23; 3 Ne. 11: 31-40; D&C 133: 16). Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation, 2 Cor. 7: 10. The Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent has wrought a mighty change in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, Mosiah 5: 2. If he confess his sins and repent, him shall ye forgive, Mosiah 26: 29. After Alma’s preaching, many people began to repent, Alma 14: 1. Do not procrastinate the day of your repentance, Alma 34: 33. Alma taught Helaman of his repentance and conversion, Alma 36 (Mosiah 27: 8-32). Repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment, Alma 42: 16. BIBLE DICTIONARY REPENTANCE The Greek word of which this is the translation denotes a change of mind, i.e., a fresh view about God, about oneself, and about the world. Since we are born into conditions of mortality, repentance comes to mean a turning of the heart and will to God, and a renunciation of sin to which we are naturally inclined. Without this there can be no progress in the things of the soul's salvation, for all accountable persons are stained by sin, and must be cleansed in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. Repentance is not optional for salvation; it is a commandment of God (D&C 18: 9-22; D&C 20: 29; D&C 133: 16). The preaching of repentance by John the Baptist formed the preparation for the ministry of our Lord. Yea, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, that the Spirit saith: Behold the glory of the bKing• of all the earth; and also the King of heaven shall very soon shine forth among all the children of men. 51 And also the Spirit saith unto me, yea, crieth unto me with a mighty voice, saying: Go forth and say unto this people—Repent, for except ye repent ye can in nowise inherit the akingdom of bheaven. 52 And again I say unto you, the Spirit saith: Behold, the aax• is laid at the root of the tree; therefore every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be bhewn• down and cast into the fire, yea, a fire which cannot be consumed, even an unquenchable fire. Behold, and remember, the Holy One hath spoken it. 53 And now my beloved brethren, I say unto you, can ye withstand these sayings; yea, can ye lay aside these things, and atrample the Holy One under your feet; yea, can ye be bpuffed• up in the pride of your hearts; yea, will ye still persist in the wearing of ccostly• apparel and setting your hearts upon the vain things of the world, upon your driches•? 54 Yea, will ye persist in supposing that ye are better one than another; yea, will ye persist in the persecution of your brethren, who humble themselves and do walk after the holy order of God, wherewith they have been brought into this church, having been asanctified by the Holy Spirit, and they do bring forth works which are meet for repentance— 55 Yea, and will you persist in turning your backs upon the apoor•, and the needy, and in withholding your substance from them? 56 And finally, all ye that will persist in your wickedness, I say unto you that these are they who shall be hewn down and cast into the fire except they speedily repent. Alma 7: 13-16 13 Now the Spirit aknoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the bflesh that he might ctake• upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me. 14 Now I say unto you that ye must arepent, and be born again; for the Spirit saith if ye are not born again ye cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven; therefore come and be baptized unto repentance, that ye may be washed from your sins, that ye may have faith on the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world, who is mighty to save and to cleanse from all unrighteousness. 15 Yea, I say unto you come and fear not, and lay aside every sin, which easily doth abeset• you, which doth bind you down to destruction, yea, come and go forth, and show unto your God that ye are willing to repent of your sins and enter into a covenant with him to keep his commandments, and witness it unto him this day by going into the waters of baptism. 16 And whosoever doeth this, and keepeth the commandments of God from thenceforth, the same will aremember• that I say unto him, yea, he will remember that I have said unto him, he shall have eternal life, according to the testimony of the Holy Spirit, which testifieth in me. Alma 6: 2 2 And it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church who arepented of their sins were baptized unto repentance, and were received into the church. Alma 7: 9 9 But behold, the Spirit hath said this much unto me, saying: Cry unto this people, saying—aRepent• ye, and prepare the way of the Lord, and walk in his paths, which are straight; for behold, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and the Son of God bcometh• upon the face of the earth. Alma 9: 12 12 Behold, now I say unto you that he commandeth you to repent; and except ye repent, ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God. But behold, this is not all—he has commanded you to repent, or he will utterly adestroy• you from off the face of the earth; yea, he will visit you in his banger•, and in his cfierce• anger he will not turn away. Alma 12: 24 24 And we see that adeath comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek, which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto bman• in which he might repent; therefore this life became a cprobationary• state; a time to dprepare• to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead. Alma 13: 10 10 Now, as I said concerning the holy order, or this ahigh• priesthood, there were many who were ordained and became high priests of God; and it was on account of their exceeding bfaith and crepentance, and their righteousness before God, they choosing to repent and work righteousness rather than to perish; Alma 13: 18 18 But Melchizedek having exercised mighty faith, and received the office of the high priesthood according to the aholy order of God, did preach repentance unto his people. And behold, they did repent; and Melchizedek did establish peace in the land in his days; therefore he was called the prince of peace, for he was the king of Salem; and he did reign under his father. Alma 26: 22 22 Yea, he that arepenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good bworks, and prayeth continually without ceasing—unto such it is given to know the cmysteries• of God; yea, unto such it shall be dgiven• to ereveal• things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance. Alma 29: 1 1 O THAT I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the atrump• of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people! Alma 32: 13 13 And now, because ye are compelled to be humble blessed are ye; for a man sometimes, if he is compelled to be humble, seeketh arepentance; and now surely, whosoever repenteth shall find mercy; and he that findeth mercy and bendureth• to the end the same shall be saved. Alma 34: 33 33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many awitnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not bprocrastinate• the day of your crepentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the dnight• of edarkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Alma 42: 22 22 But there is a law given, and a apunishment affixed, and a brepentance granted; which repentance, mercy claimeth; otherwise, justice claimeth the creature and executeth the claw•, and the law inflicteth the punishment; if not so, the works of justice would be destroyed, and God would cease to be God. Alma 42: 29 29 And now, my son, I desire that ye should let these things atrouble• you no more, and only let your sins trouble you, with that trouble which shall bring you down unto repentance. Hel. 5: 11 11 And he hath power given unto him from the Father to redeem them from their sins because of repentance; therefore he hath asent• his angels to declare the tidings of the conditions of repentance, which bringeth unto the power of the Redeemer, unto the salvation of their souls. Hel. 5: 41 41 And Aminadab said unto them: You must arepent, and cry unto the voice, even until ye shall have bfaith in Christ, who was taught unto you by Alma, and cAmulek•, and Zeezrom; and when ye shall do this, the cloud of darkness shall be removed from overshadowing you. D&C 84: 27 27 Which agospel• is the gospel of brepentance and of cbaptism, and the dremission of sins, and the elaw of fcarnal• commandments, which the Lord in his wrath caused to continue with the house of Aaron among the children of Israel until gJohn•, whom God raised up, being hfilled• with the Holy Ghost from his mother’s womb. D&C 16: 6 6 And now, behold, I say unto you, that the thing which will be of the most worth unto you will be to declare repentance unto this people, that you may bring souls unto me, that you may rest with them in the kingdom of my Father. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and abaptism• by water; and then cometh a bremission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost. Jacob 3: 3 3 But, wo, wo, unto you that are not pure in heart, that are filthy this day before God; for except ye repent the land is acursed for your sakes; and the Lamanites, which are not bfilthy like unto you, nevertheless they are ccursed• with a sore cursing, shall scourge you even unto destruction. Mosiah 2: 38 38 Therefore if that man arepenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the demands of divine bjustice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own cguilt•, which doth cause him to shrink from the dpresence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and epain, and fanguish, which is like an unquenchable gfire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever. Mosiah 3: 12 12 But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he arebelleth• against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the bLord Jesus Christ. Mosiah 3: 21 21 And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be found ablameless• before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent. Mosiah 4: 10 10 And again, believe that ye must arepent of your sins and forsake them, and humble yourselves before God; and ask in bsincerity of heart that he would cforgive• you; and now, if you dbelieve• all these things see that ye edo• them. Mosiah 18: 20 20 Yea, even he commanded them that they should apreach nothing save it were repentance and faith on the Lord, who had redeemed his people. Mosiah 26: 29 29 Therefore I say unto you, Go; and whosoever transgresseth against me, him shall ye ajudge baccording to the sins which he has committed; and if he cconfess• his sins before thee and me, and drepenteth in the sincerity of his heart, him shall ye eforgive, and I will forgive him also. Mosiah 26: 35-36 35 And whosoever repented of their sins and did aconfess them, them he did number among the people of the church; 36 And those that would not confess their sins and repent of their iniquity, the same were not numbered among the people of the church, and their names were ablotted• out. 3 Ne. 18: 29-32 29 For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and ablood bunworthily• eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him. 30 Nevertheless, ye shall not acast• him out from among you, but ye shall bminister• unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in my name; and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood. 31 But if he repent not he shall not be numbered among my people, that he may not destroy my people, for behold I aknow• bmy• sheep, and they are numbered. 32 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out of your asynagogues•, or your places of worship, for unto such shall ye continue to minister; for ye know not but what they will return and repent, and come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I shall bheal• them; and ye shall be the means of bringing salvation unto them. Moro. 6: 7 7 And they were strict to observe that there should be ano• iniquity among them; and whoso was found to commit iniquity, and bthree• witnesses of the church did condemn them before the celders•, and if they repented not, and dconfessed not, their names were eblotted• out, and they were not fnumbered among the people of Christ. Mosiah 27: 28 28 Nevertheless, after awading• through much btribulation, repenting nigh unto death, the Lord in mercy hath seen fit to snatch me out of an ceverlasting• burning, and I am born of God.
