Mosiah 3: 12 12 But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he arebelleth• against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the bLord Jesus Christ. Mosiah 4: 3 3 And it came to pass that after they had spoken these words the Spirit of the Lord came upon them, and they were filled with joy, having received a aremission of their sins, and having peace of bconscience, because of the exceeding cfaith which they had in Jesus Christ who should come, according to the dwords• which king Benjamin had spoken unto them. Alma 37: 33 33 aPreach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be bmeek and lowly in heart; teach them to cwithstand every dtemptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. Hel. 13: 6 6 Yea, heavy adestruction• awaiteth this people, and it surely cometh unto this people, and nothing can save this people save it be repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ, who surely shall come into the world, and shall suffer many things and shall be slain for his people. 3 Ne. 7: 16 16 Therefore, being agrieved• for the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds—went forth among them in that same year, and began to testify, boldly, repentance and remission of sins through faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Ne. 7: 18 18 And it came to pass that they were angry with him, even because he had greater power than they, for it were anot• possible that they could disbelieve his words, for so great was his faith on the Lord Jesus Christ that angels did minister unto him daily. 3 Ne. 19: 35 35 And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of praying he came again to the disciples, and said unto them: aSo• great bfaith have I never seen among all the Jews; wherefore I could not show unto them so great cmiracles•, because of their dunbelief•. Morm. 9: 37 37 And may the Lord Jesus Christ grant that their prayers may be answered according to their faith; and may God the Father remember the covenant which he hath made with the house of Israel; and may he bless them forever, through faith on the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Ether 3: 19 19 And because of the aknowledge of this man he could not be kept from beholding within the bveil; and he saw the finger of Jesus, which, when he saw, he fell with fear; for he knew that it was the finger of the Lord; and he had cfaith• no longer, for he knew, nothing ddoubting. Ether 4: 7 7 And in that day that they shall exercise afaith• in me, saith the Lord, even as the brother of Jared did, that they may become bsanctified in me, then will I cmanifest• unto them the things which the brother of Jared saw, even to the unfolding unto them all my drevelations•, saith Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the eFather• of the heavens and of the earth, and all things that in them are. Ether 12: 22 22 And it is by faith that my fathers have obtained the apromise• that these things should come unto their brethren through the Gentiles; therefore the Lord hath commanded me, yea, even Jesus Christ. Moro. 3: 3 3 In the name of Jesus Christ I ordain you to be a priest, (or, if he be a ateacher) I ordain you to be a teacher, to preach repentance and bremission of sins through Jesus Christ, by the endurance of faith on his name to the end. Moro. 7: 44 44 If so, his afaith• and hope is vain, for none is bacceptable• before God, save the cmeek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and dconfesses• by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity. Moro. 8: 3 3 I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child, Jesus, that he, through his infinite agoodness• and bgrace, will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end. Testimony of Three Witnesses Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come: That we, through the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of Nephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken. And we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for his voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, that we beheld and bear record that these things are true. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found spotless before the judgment-seat of Christ, and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. D&C 3: 20 20 And that the aLamanites• might come to the knowledge of their fathers, and that they might know the bpromises• of the Lord, and that they may cbelieve• the gospel and drely• upon the merits of Jesus Christ, and be eglorified• through faith in his name, and that through their repentance they might be saved. Amen. D&C 11: 10 10 Behold, thou hast a agift•, or thou shalt have a gift if thou wilt desire of me in faith, with an bhonest• heart, believing in the power of Jesus Christ, or in my power which speaketh unto thee; D&C 20: 29 29 And we know that all men must arepent and bbelieve• on the name of Jesus Christ, and worship the Father in his name, and cendure in dfaith on his name to the end, or they cannot be esaved in the kingdom of God. D&C 31: 13 13 Be afaithful unto the bend•, and lo, I am cwith• you. These words are not of man nor of men, but of me, even Jesus Christ, your Redeemer, by the dwill of the Father. Amen. D&C 115: 3 3 And also unto my faithful servants who are of the high council of my achurch in Zion, for thus it shall be called, and unto all the elders and people of my Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, scattered abroad in all the world; D&C 135: 7 7 They were innocent of any crime, as they had often been proved before, and were only confined in jail by the conspiracy of traitors and wicked men; and their innocent blood on the floor of Carthage jail is a broad seal affixed to “Mormonism” that cannot be rejected by any court on earth, and their innocent blood on the escutcheon of the State of Illinois, with the broken faith of the State as pledged by the governor, is a witness to the truth of the everlasting gospel that all the world cannot impeach; and their innocent blood on the banner of liberty, and on the magna charta of the United States, is an ambassador for the religion of Jesus Christ, that will touch the hearts of honest men among all nations; and their innocent blood, with the innocent blood of all the martyrs under the aaltar• that John saw, will cry unto the Lord of Hosts till he avenges that blood on the earth. Amen. D&C 136: 37 37 Therefore, marvel not at these things, for ye are not yet apure; ye can not yet bear my glory; but ye shall behold it if ye are faithful in keeping all my words that I have bgiven• you, from the days of Adam to Abraham, from Abraham to Moses, from Moses to Jesus and his apostles, and from Jesus and his apostles to Joseph Smith, whom I did call upon by mine cangels•, my ministering servants, and by mine own voice out of the heavens, to bring forth my work; D&C 138: 12 12 And there were gathered together in one place an innumerable company of the spirits of the ajust•, who had been bfaithful• in the ctestimony of Jesus while they lived in mortality; A of F 1: 4 4 We believe that the first principles and aordinances of the Gospel are: first, bFaith• in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, cRepentance; third, dBaptism by eimmersion for the fremission of sins; fourth, Laying on of ghands for the hgift of the Holy Ghost. GS Adoption (1) A person who is of non-Israelite lineage becomes a member of the family of Abraham and the house of Israel by having faith in Jesus Christ, repenting, being baptized by immersion, and receiving the Holy Ghost (2 Ne. 31: 17-18; D&C 84: 73-74; Abr. 2: 6, 11). GS Atone, Atonement As used in the scriptures, to atone is to suffer the penalty for an act of sin, thereby removing the effects of sin from the repentant sinner and allowing him to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ was the only one capable of making a perfect atonement for all mankind. He was able to do so because of his selection and foreordination in the Grand Council before the world was formed (Ether 3: 14; Moses 4: 1-2; Abr. 3: 27), his divine Sonship, and his sinless life. His atonement included his suffering for the sins of mankind in the Garden of Gethsemane, the shedding of his blood, and his death and subsequent resurrection from the grave (Isa. 53: 3-12; Mosiah 3: 5-11; Alma 7: 10-13). Because of the Atonement, all people will rise from the dead with immortal bodies (1 Cor. 15: 22). The Atonement also provides the way for us to be forgiven of our sins and live forever with God. But a person who has reached the age of accountability and received the law can receive these blessings only if he has faith in Jesus Christ, repents of his sins, receives the ordinances of salvation, and obeys the commandments of God. Those who do not reach the age of accountability and those without the law are redeemed through the Atonement (Mosiah 15: 24-25; Moro. 8: 22). The scriptures clearly teach that if Christ had not atoned for our sins, no law, ordinance, or sacrifice would satisfy the demands of justice, and man could never regain God’s presence (2 Ne. 2; 9). GS Baptism, Baptize From a Greek word meaning to “dip” or “immerse.” Baptism by immersion in water by one having authority is the introductory ordinance of the gospel and is necessary to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is preceded by faith in Jesus Christ and by repentance. It must be followed by receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost in order to be complete (2 Ne. 31: 13-14). Baptism by water and the Spirit is necessary before a person can enter the celestial kingdom. Adam was the first to be baptized (Moses 6: 64-65). Jesus also was baptized to fulfill all righteousness and to show the way for all mankind (Matt. 3: 13-17; 2 Ne. 31: 5-12). GS Belief, Believe To have faith in someone or to accept something as true. A person must repent and believe in Jesus Christ in order to be saved in the kingdom of God (D&C 20: 29). GS Church, Signs of the True First principles and ordinances: Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, John 3: 3-5. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Acts 2: 38. Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost, Acts 8: 14-17. Become children of God by faith in Jesus Christ, Gal. 3: 26-27. Repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my Beloved Son, 2 Ne. 31: 11-21. They who believed were baptized and received the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, D&C 76: 50-53. Proper priesthood is needed to baptize and to give the gift of the Holy Ghost, JS-H 1: 70-72. The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are described, A of F 1: 4. GS Confess, Confession The scriptures use confession in at least two ways. In one sense, to confess is to state one’s faith in something, such as to confess that Jesus is the Christ (Matt. 10: 32; Rom. 10: 9; 1 Jn. 4: 1-3; D&C 88: 104). GS Confidence Having an assurance, belief, trust, or faith in something, especially God and Jesus Christ. GS Conversion, Convert Repentance, baptism for the remission of sins, the reception of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, and continued faith in the Lord Jesus Christ make conversion complete. A natural man will be changed into a new person who is sanctified and pure, born again in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 5: 17; Mosiah 3: 19). GS Curse, Curses The Lord may remove curses because of the individual’s or people’s faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel (Alma 23: 16-18, 3 Ne. 2: 14-16; A of F 1: 3). GS Endure He that endureth to the end shall be saved, Matt. 10: 22 (Mark 13: 13). They have no root and so endure but for a time, Mark 4: 17. Charity endureth all things, 1 Cor. 13: 7. After Abraham had patiently endured, he obtained the promise, Heb. 6: 15. If they endure unto the end they shall be lifted up at the last day, 1 Ne. 13: 37. If ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved, 1 Ne. 22: 31 (Alma 5: 13). If ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, ye shall have eternal life, 2 Ne. 31: 20 (3 Ne. 15: 9; D&C 14: 7). Whoso taketh upon him my name, and endureth to the end, shall be saved, 3 Ne. 27: 6. Whosoever endureth of my church to the end, him will I establish upon my rock, D&C 10: 69. He that endureth in faith shall overcome the world, D&C 63: 20, 47. All thrones and dominions shall be set forth upon all who have endured valiantly for the gospel of Jesus Christ, D&C 121: 29. GS Eternal Life Thou hast the words of eternal life, John 6: 68. This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, John 17: 3 (D&C 132: 24). Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, 1 Tim. 6: 12. People are free to choose liberty and eternal life, 2 Ne. 2: 27 (Hel. 14: 31). To be spiritually minded is life eternal, 2 Ne. 9: 39. Then are ye in the narrow path that leads to eternal life, 2 Ne. 31: 17-20. To believe in Christ and endure to the end is life eternal, 2 Ne. 33: 4 (3 Ne. 15: 9). He that hath eternal life is rich, D&C 6: 7 (D&C 11: 7). Eternal life is the greatest of all the gifts of God, D&C 14: 7 (Rom. 6: 23). The righteous will receive peace in this world, and eternal life in the world to come, D&C 59: 23. Those who endure to the end shall have a crown of eternal life, D&C 66: 12 (D&C 75: 5). All who die without the gospel who would have received it had they lived are heirs of the celestial kingdom, D&C 137: 7-9. God’s work and glory is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, Moses 1: 39. God gives eternal life to the obedient, Moses 5: 11. GS Faith Confidence in something or someone. As most often used in the scriptures, faith is confidence and trust in Jesus Christ that lead a person to obey him. Faith must be centered in Jesus Christ in order for it to lead a person to salvation. Latter-day Saints also have faith in God the Father, the Holy Ghost, priesthood power, and other important aspects of the restored gospel. GS Faith Faith includes a hope for things which are not seen, but which are true (Heb. 11: 1; Alma 32: 21; Ether 12: 6). Faith is kindled by hearing the gospel taught by authorized administrators sent by God (Rom. 10: 14-17). Miracles do not produce faith, but strong faith is developed by obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, faith comes by righteousness (Alma 32: 40-43; Ether 12: 4, 6, 12; D&C 63: 9-12). GS Faith The just shall live by faith, Hab. 2: 4. Thy faith hath made thee whole, Matt. 9: 22 (Mark 5: 34; Luke 7: 50). According to your faith be it unto you, Matt. 9: 29. If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible unto you, Matt. 17: 20 (Luke 17: 6). I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not, Luke 22: 32. Faith in Christ’s name hath made this man strong, Acts 3: 16. Faith cometh by hearing the word of God, Rom. 10: 17. If Christ is not risen your faith is also vain, 1 Cor. 15: 14. Faith worketh by love, Gal. 5: 6. By grace are ye saved through faith, Eph. 2: 8 (2 Ne. 25: 23). Take the shield of faith, Eph. 6: 16 (D&C 27: 17). Obey your parents in the Lord, Eph. 6: 1 (Col. 3: 20). If the children repent, thine indignation shall be turned away, D&C 98: 45-48. Eve’s faithful daughters worshiped the true and living God, D&C 138: 38-39. GS Firstborn Jesus was the firstborn of the spirit children of our Heavenly Father, the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh, and the first to rise from the dead in the resurrection (Col. 1: 13-18). Faithful Saints become members of the Church of the Firstborn in eternity (D&C 93: 21-22). GS Galatians, Epistle to A book in the New Testament. It was originally a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Saints living throughout Galatia. The theme of this letter is that true freedom can be found only in living the gospel of Jesus Christ. If the Saints adopted the teachings of Jewish Christians who insisted on observing the Mosaic law, they would limit or destroy the freedom they had found in Christ. In the epistle Paul established his own position as an Apostle, explained the doctrine of righteousness by faith, and affirmed the value of a spiritual religion. GS Grace Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ, John 1: 17. Through the grace of Christ, we shall be saved, Acts 15: 11 (Rom. 3: 23-24; D&C 138: 14). We have access by faith to his grace, Rom. 5: 2. By grace ye are saved through faith, Eph. 2: 8. The grace of God brings salvation, Titus 2: 11. Come boldly unto the throne of grace, Heb. 4: 16. God gives grace to the humble, 1 Pet. 5: 5. No one can dwell in the presence of God but through the merits, mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, 2 Ne. 2: 8. It is only in and through the grace of God that men are saved, 2 Ne. 10: 24. We are saved by grace, after all we can do, 2 Ne. 25: 23. It is by grace that we have power to do these things, Jacob 4: 7. Men might be restored unto grace for grace, according to their works, Hel. 12: 24. My grace is sufficient for the meek and all that humble themselves, Ether 12: 26-27. Moroni prayed that the Gentiles be given grace that they might have charity, Ether 12: 36, 41. By the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, Moro. 10: 32-33. Jesus received grace for grace, D&C 93: 12-13, 20. GS Heal, Healings I am the Lord that heals thee, Ex. 15: 26. Naaman dipped himself in the Jordan River seven times and was healed, 2 Kgs. 5: 1-14. With his stripes we are healed, Isa. 53: 5 (Mosiah 14: 3). The Sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings, Mal. 4: 2. Jesus healed all manner of sickness, Matt. 4: 23 (Matt. 9: 35). He gave them power to heal all manner of sickness, Matt. 10: 1. He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, Luke 4: 18. They were healed by the power of the Lamb of God, 1 Ne. 11: 31. If thou believest in the redemption of Christ, thou canst be healed, Alma 15: 8. He did heal them every one, 3 Ne. 17: 9. He that hath faith in me to be healed shall be healed, D&C 42: 48. In my name they shall heal the sick, D&C 84: 68. We believe in the gift of healings, A of F 1: 7. GS Heaven The term heaven has two basic meanings in the scriptures. (1) It is the place where God lives and the future home of the Saints (Gen. 28: 12; Ps. 11: 4; Matt. 6: 9). (2) It is the expanse around the earth (Gen. 1: 1, 17; Ex. 24: 10). Heaven is clearly not paradise, which is the temporary place for the faithful spirits of those who have lived and died on this earth. Jesus visited paradise after his death on the cross, but on the third day, he informed Mary that he had not yet been to the Father (Luke 23: 39-44; John 20: 17; D&C 138: 11-37). GS Hebrews, Epistle to Chapters 1 and 2 explain that Jesus is greater than the angels. Chapters 3-7 compare Jesus to Moses and to the law of Moses and testify that he is greater than both. They also teach that the Melchizedek Priesthood is greater than the Aaronic. Chapters 8-9 describe how the Mosaic ordinances prepared people for Christ’s ministry and how Christ is the mediator of the new covenant (Alma 37: 38-45; D&C 84: 21-24). Chapter 10 is an exhortation to diligence and faithfulness. Chapter 11 is a discourse on faith. Chapter 12 gives admonitions and greetings. Chapter 13 relates the honorable nature of marriage and the importance of obedience. GS Hope The confident expectation of and longing for the promised blessings of righteousness. The scriptures often speak of hope as anticipation of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. GS Hope Blessed is the man whose hope the Lord is, Jer. 17: 7. The Lord will be the hope of his people, Joel 3: 16. We have hope through patience and the scriptures, Rom. 15: 4. God hath begotten us unto a lively hope in the resurrection of Christ, 1 Pet. 1: 3. Every man that hath this hope purifieth himself, 1 Jn. 3: 2-3. Ye must press forward, having a perfect brightness of hope, 2 Ne. 31: 20. See that ye have faith, hope, and charity, Alma 7: 24 (1 Cor. 13: 13; Moro. 10: 20). I wish that ye would hearken unto my words, having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life, Alma 13: 27-29. If ye have faith, ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true, Alma 32: 21 (Heb. 11: 1). Hope comes of faith and maketh an anchor to the soul, Ether 12: 4 (Heb. 6: 17-19). Man must hope or he cannot receive an inheritance, Ether 12: 32. Mormon spoke concerning faith, hope, and charity, Moro. 7: 1. Ye shall hope through the atonement of Jesus Christ to be raised to eternal life, Moro. 7: 40-43. The Holy Ghost fills you with hope, Moro. 8: 26 (Rom. 15: 13). They departed mortal life, firm in the hope of a glorious resurrection, D&C 138: 14. GS Jesus Christ Taking the name of Jesus Christ upon us: There is no other name whereby we must be saved, Acts 4: 12 (2 Ne. 31: 21). The Apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name, Acts 5: 38-42. This is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, 1 Jn. 3: 23. Witness that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ by baptism, 2 Ne. 31: 13. I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, Mosiah 5: 6-12 (Mosiah 1: 11). Whosoever was desirous to take upon them the name of Christ did join the Church of God, Mosiah 25: 23. All those who were true believers in Christ took upon them the name of Christ, Alma 46: 15. The gate of heaven is open to those who will believe on the name of Jesus Christ, Hel. 3: 28. Blessed is he who is found faithful unto my name at the last day, Ether 4: 19. They are willing to take upon them the name of the Son, Moro. 4: 3 (D&C 20: 77). Take upon you the name of Christ, D&C 18: 21-25. GS John, Son of Zebedee The Gospel of John: In this New Testament book, John the Apostle testified that (1) Jesus is the Christ or Messiah, and (2) Jesus is the Son of God (John 20: 31). The scenes from Jesus’ life that he describes are carefully selected and arranged with this object in view. The book begins with a statement of Christ’s status in the premortal existence: he was with God, he was God, and he was the creator of all things. He was born in the flesh as the Only Begotten Son of the Father. John traces the course of Jesus’ ministry, greatly emphasizing his divinity and his resurrection from the dead. He clearly affirms that Jesus is the Son of God, attested to by miracles, by witnesses, by the prophets, and by Christ’s own voice. John teaches by contrasting light and darkness, truth and error, good and evil, God and the devil. Perhaps in no other record is the holiness of Jesus and the faithlessness of the Jewish rulers so plainly declared. GS Justification, Justify To be pardoned from punishment for sin and declared guiltless. A person is justified by the Savior’s grace through faith in him. This faith is shown by repentance and obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. Jesus Christ’s atonement enables mankind to repent and be justified or pardoned from punishment they otherwise would receive. GS Justification, Justify In the Lord shall all Israel be justified, Isa. 45: 25. Not the hearers but the doers of the law shall be justified, Rom. 2: 13. Man is justified through the blood of Christ, Rom. 5: 1-2, 9. Ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, 1 Cor. 6: 11. Being justified by his grace, we shall be made heirs, Titus 3: 7. Was not Abraham our father justified by works? James 2: 21. By works a man is justified, and not by faith only, James 2: 14-26. By the law no flesh is justified, 2 Ne. 2: 5. My righteous servant shall justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities, Mosiah 14: 11 (Isa. 53: 11). Could ye say that your garments have been cleansed through Christ? Alma 5: 27. Justification through the grace of Jesus Christ is true, D&C 20: 30-31 (D&C 88: 39). By the Spirit ye are justified, Moses 6: 60. GS Lamb of God He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, Isa. 53: 7 (Mosiah 14: 7). Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world, John 1: 29 (Alma 7: 14). Ye were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish, 1 Pet. 1: 18-20. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, Rev. 5: 12. We overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb, Rev. 12: 11. These are made white in the blood of the Lamb, because of their faith in him, 1 Ne. 12: 11. The Lamb of God is the Son of the Eternal Father, and the Savior of the world, 1 Ne. 13: 40 (1 Ne. 11: 21). Cry mightily unto the Father in the name of Jesus, that perhaps ye may be cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, Morm. 9: 6 (Rev. 7: 14; Alma 34: 36). The Son of Man is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, Moses 7: 47. GS Law of Moses God gave laws through Moses to the house of Israel to replace the higher law that they had failed to obey (Ex. 34; JST, Ex. 34: 1-2; JST, Deut. 10: 2). The law of Moses consisted of many principles, rules, ceremonies, rituals, and symbols to remind the people of their duties and responsibilities. It included a law of moral, ethical, religious, and physical commandments and performances—including sacrifices (Lev. 1-7)—that were intended to remind them of God and their duty towards him (Mosiah 13: 30). Faith, repentance, baptism in water, and remission of sins were part of the law, as were the Ten Commandments and many other commandments of high ethical and moral value. Much of the ceremonial law was fulfilled at the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which ended sacrifice by the shedding of blood (Alma 34: 13-14). The law was administered under the Aaronic Priesthood and was a preparatory gospel to bring its adherents to Christ. GS Life I have set before thee this day life and good, Deut. 30: 15-20. Thou wilt shew me the path of life, Ps. 16: 11. He that followeth after righteousness findeth life, Prov. 21: 21. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it, Matt. 10: 39 (Matt. 16: 25; Mark 8: 35; Luke 9: 24; 17: 33). The Son of Man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them, Luke 9: 56. In him was life, and the life was the light of men, John 1: 4. He that believeth on him that sent me is passed from death unto life, John 5: 24. I am the way, the truth, and the life, John 14: 6. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are most miserable, 1 Cor. 15: 19-22. Godliness has promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come, 1 Tim. 4: 8. Our children may look forward to that life which is in Christ, 2 Ne. 25: 23-27. This life is the time for men to prepare to meet God, Alma 34: 32 (Alma 12: 24). I am the light and the life of the world, 3 Ne. 9: 18 (Mosiah 16: 9; 3 Ne. 11: 11; Ether 4: 12). Blessed are they who are faithful, whether in life or in death, D&C 50: 5. This is eternal lives—to know God and Jesus Christ, D&C 132: 24. This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, Moses 1: 39. GS Lord Nothing is too hard for the Lord, Gen. 18: 14. The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, Ex. 33: 11. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, Deut. 6: 5 (Matt. 22: 37; Mark 12: 30). As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord, Josh. 24: 15. The Lord is my shepherd, Ps. 23: 1. The Lord is strong and mighty, mighty in battle, Ps. 24: 8. The Lord Jehovah is my strength, Isa. 12: 2 (2 Ne. 22: 2). I the Lord am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, Isa. 60: 16. Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, Matt. 4: 10 (Luke 4: 8). The Lord God, the God of Abraham, did deliver the Israelites out of bondage, Alma 29: 11. Nothing can save the people except repentance and faith on the Lord, Hel. 13: 6 (Mosiah 3: 12). Listen to the words of Jesus Christ, your Lord, D&C 15: 1. Seek the face of the Lord always, D&C 101: 38. The Lord shall be red in his apparel at the Second Coming, D&C 133: 48 (Isa. 63: 1-4). Abraham talked with the Lord face to face, Abr. 3: 11. We believe that the first principle of the gospel is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, A of F 1: 4. GS Merciful, Mercy The Lord is merciful and gracious, Ex. 34: 6 (Deut. 4: 31). His mercy endureth for ever, 1 Chr. 16: 34. Goodness and mercy shall follow me, Ps. 23: 6. He that has mercy on the poor is happy, Prov. 14: 21. I desired mercy and not sacrifice, Hosea 6: 6. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy, Matt. 5: 7 (3 Ne. 12: 7). Woe unto hypocrites who pay tithes and omit the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith, Matt. 23: 23. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful, Luke 6: 36. Mercy shall go before thy face, Moses 7: 31. GS Messiah Many Jews were looking only for a deliverer from the Roman power and for a greater national prosperity; thus, when the Messiah came, the leaders and many others rejected him. Only the humble and faithful were able to see in Jesus of Nazareth the true Christ (Isa. 53; Matt. 16: 16; John 4: 25-26). GS Miracle An extraordinary event caused by the power of God. Miracles are an important element in the work of Jesus Christ. They include healings, restoring the dead to life, and resurrection. Miracles are a part of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Faith is necessary in order for miracles to be manifested (Mark 6: 5-6; Morm. 9: 10-20; Ether 12: 12). GS Miracle When Pharaoh shall speak, Shew a miracle, Ex. 7: 9. No man which shall do a miracle in my name can lightly speak evil of me, Mark 9: 39. Cana was the place where Jesus performed his first miracle, John 2: 11. I am a God of miracles, 2 Ne. 27: 23. The power of God works miracles, Alma 23: 6. Christ could show greater miracles to those on the American continent because they had great faith, 3 Ne. 19: 35. God has not ceased to be a God of miracles, Morm. 9: 15. Require not miracles, except the Lord shall command you, D&C 24: 13-14. To some is given the gift of working miracles, D&C 46: 21 (Moro. 10: 12). GS Passover This is the ordinance of the Passover, Ex. 12: 43. Jesus and his Apostles kept the Passover at the Last Supper, Matt. 26: 17-29 (Mark 14: 12-25). Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world, John 1: 29, 36. GS Pearl of Great Price The Pearl of Great Price is also the name given to one of four volumes of scripture called the “standard works” of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first edition of the Pearl of Great Price was published in 1851 and contained some material that is now in the Doctrine and Covenants. Editions published since 1902 contain (1) excerpts from Joseph Smith’s translation of Genesis, called the book of Moses, and of Matthew 24, called Joseph Smith—Matthew; (2) Joseph Smith’s translation of some Egyptian papyrus that he obtained in 1835, called the book of Abraham; (3) an excerpt from Joseph Smith’s history of the Church that he wrote in 1838, called Joseph Smith—History; and (4) the Articles of Faith, thirteen statements of belief and doctrine. GS Perfect Let your heart be perfect with the Lord, 1 Kgs. 8: 61. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven, Matt. 5: 48 (3 Ne. 12: 48). If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, James 3: 2. Faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things, Alma 32: 21, 26. The Atonement was made so that God might be a perfect God, Alma 42: 15. Moroni was a man of perfect understanding, Alma 48: 11-13, 17-18. The Spirit of Christ is given to every man to judge and know with a perfect knowledge whether something is of God or the devil, Moro. 7: 15-17. The offices in the Church are for the perfecting of the Saints, D&C 124: 143 (Eph. 4: 11-13). The living are not perfect without their dead, D&C 128: 15, 18. Noah was a just man, and perfect in his generation, Moses 8: 27. GS Peter In the New Testament, Peter was originally known as Simeon or Simon (2 Pet. 1: 1), a fisherman of Bethsaida living at Capernaum with his wife. Jesus healed Peter’s wife’s mother (Mark 1: 29-31). Peter was called with his brother Andrew to be a disciple of Jesus Christ (Matt. 4: 18-22; Mark 1: 16-18; Luke 5: 1-11). His Aramaic name, Cephas, meaning “a seer” or “stone,” was given to him by the Lord (John 1: 40-42; JST, John 1: 42). While the New Testament mentions some of Peter’s mortal weaknesses, it also illustrates that he overcame them and was made strong by his faith in Jesus Christ. GS Plan of Redemption He was wounded for our transgressions, Isa. 53: 5 (Mosiah 14: 5). There is none other name under heaven by which man can be saved, Acts 4: 12. As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive, 1 Cor. 15: 22. By grace are ye saved through faith, Eph. 2: 8 (2 Ne. 25: 23). God promised eternal life before the world began, Titus 1: 2. Jesus is the author of eternal salvation, Heb. 5: 8-9. The plan of redemption was extended to the dead, 1 Pet. 3: 18-20; 4: 6 (D&C 138). Death fulfills the merciful plan of the great Creator, 2 Ne. 9: 6. How great is the plan of our God! 2 Ne. 9: 13. My work and my glory is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, Moses 1: 39. This is the plan of salvation unto all men, Moses 6: 52-62. We will prove them herewith, Abr. 3: 22-26. GS Prayer Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord, Gen. 4: 26. At the place of the altar, Abraham called on the name of the Lord, Gen. 13: 4. Abraham’s servant prayed for help in finding a wife for Isaac, Gen. 24: 10-19. God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you, 1 Sam. 12: 23. After this manner therefore pray ye, Matt. 6: 9-13 (Luke 11: 2; 3 Ne. 13: 9). Ask, and it shall be given you, Matt. 7: 7 (3 Ne. 14: 7; D&C 4: 7; 6: 5; 66: 9). Jesus went up into a mountain apart to pray, Matt. 14: 23. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation, Matt. 26: 41 (Mark 14: 38; 3 Ne. 18: 15-18; D&C 31: 12). Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering, James 1: 5-6 (D&C 42: 68; 46: 7). The fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, James 5: 16. Hearken unto the Spirit which teacheth a man to pray, 2 Ne. 32: 8-9. I cried unto him in mighty prayer, Enos 1: 4. I have fasted and prayed many days, Alma 5: 45-46 (Alma 26: 22). Parents shall teach their children to pray, D&C 68: 28. The Lord their God is slow to hearken unto their prayers, D&C 101: 7-8 (Mosiah 21: 15). Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall give thee answer to thy prayers, D&C 112: 10. Adam was commanded to call upon God in the name of the Son, Moses 5: 8. The Father and the Son appeared to Joseph Smith in answer to his prayer, JS-H 1: 11-20. GS Preach The Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, Isa. 61: 1 (Luke 4: 16-21). Arise, go unto Nineveh, and preach unto it, Jonah 3: 2-10. From that time Jesus began to preach, Matt. 4: 17. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature, Mark 16: 15. We preach Christ crucified, 1 Cor. 1: 22-24. He went and preached unto the spirits in prison, 1 Pet. 3: 19. There was nothing save it were preaching and stirring them up continually to keep them in fear of the Lord, Enos 1: 23. He commanded them that they should preach nothing save it were repentance and faith on the Lord, Mosiah 18: 20. The preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which is just, Alma 31: 5. You need not suppose that you are called to preach until you are called, D&C 11: 15. It shall not be given to any one to go forth to preach except he be ordained, D&C 42: 11. This gospel shall be preached to every nation, D&C 133: 37. The gospel began to be preached from the beginning, Moses 5: 58. GS Principle A basic doctrine, truth, or law. The first principles of the gospel are faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and repentance (A of F 1: 4). GS Pure, Purity Free from sin or guilt; blameless. A person becomes pure when his thoughts and actions are clean in every way. A person who has committed sin can become pure through faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, and receiving the ordinances of the gospel. GS Redeem, Redeemed, Redemption To deliver, to purchase, or to ransom, such as to free a person from bondage by payment. Redemption refers to the atonement of Jesus Christ and to deliverance from sin. Jesus’ atonement redeems all mankind from physical death. Through his atonement, those who have faith in him and who repent are also redeemed from spiritual death. GS Remission of Sins Forgiveness for wrongdoing upon condition of repentance. Remission of sins is made possible by the atonement of Jesus Christ. A person obtains a remission of his sins if he has faith in Christ, repents of his sins, receives the ordinances of baptism and laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost, and obeys God’s commandments (A of F 1: 3-4). GS Revelation The Lord reveals his work to his prophets and confirms to believers that the revelations to the prophets are true (Amos 3: 7). Through revelation, the Lord provides individual guidance for every person who seeks it and who has faith, repents, and is obedient to the gospel of Jesus Christ.”The Holy Ghost is a revelator,” said Joseph Smith, and “no man can receive the Holy Ghost without receiving revelations.” GS Revelation By every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live, Deut. 8: 3 (Matt. 4: 4; D&C 98: 11). The Lord speaks in a still small voice, 1 Kgs. 19: 12. Where there is no vision, the people perish, Prov. 29: 18. Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets, Amos 3: 7. Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father, Matt. 16: 15-19. The Spirit will guide you into all truth and will show you things to come, John 16: 13. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, James 1: 5. All things shall be revealed, 2 Ne. 27: 11. I will give unto the children of men line upon line, 2 Ne. 28: 30. There is nothing secret that will not be revealed, 2 Ne. 30: 17. The Holy Ghost will show unto you all things, 2 Ne. 32: 5. No man knows God’s ways save it be revealed unto him, Jacob 4: 8. Alma fasted and prayed for revelation, Alma 5: 46. Things never revealed will be revealed to the faithful, Alma 26: 22. Those who deny revelation know not the gospel of Jesus Christ and do not understand the scriptures, Morm. 9: 7-8. Ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith, Ether 12: 6. My word shall all be fulfilled, D&C 1: 38. Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? D&C 6: 22-23. I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, D&C 8: 2-3. If it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn, D&C 9: 8. Deny not the spirit of revelation, D&C 11: 25. Those who ask shall receive revelation upon revelation, D&C 42: 61. Whatsoever they shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost shall be the voice of the Lord, D&C 68: 4. God shall give you knowledge, D&C 121: 26. Joseph Smith saw the Father and the Son, JS-H 1: 17. We believe all that God has revealed and will yet reveal, A of F 1: 7, 9. GS Saint A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ. GS Salvation To be saved from both physical and spiritual death. All people will be saved from physical death by the grace of God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each individual can also be saved from spiritual death as well by the grace of God, through faith in Jesus Christ. This faith is manifested in a life of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel and service to Christ. GS Steward, Stewardship Thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, Matt. 25: 14-23. Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required, Luke 12: 48 (D&C 82: 3). Jesus gave the parable of the unjust steward, Luke 16: 1-8. Whoso is found a faithful steward shall enter into the joy of his Lord, D&C 51: 19. Every man is to give an account of his stewardship, D&C 72: 3-5. He that is a faithful and wise steward shall inherit all things, D&C 78: 22. The Lord will make every man accountable as a steward over earthly blessings, D&C 104: 11-17 (D&C 42: 32). Be diligent that thou mayest be a wise steward, D&C 136: 27. GS Tempt, Temptation Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Matt. 6: 13 (3 Ne. 13: 12). God will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able to bear, 1 Cor. 10: 13. Christ was tempted like as we are, Heb. 4: 14-15. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation, James 1: 12-14. The temptations of the adversary cannot overpower those who hearken unto the word of God, 1 Ne. 15: 24 (Hel. 5: 12). Man could not act for himself save he was enticed by the one or the other, 2 Ne. 2: 11-16. Watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, Alma 13: 28. Teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ, Alma 37: 33. Pray always lest ye enter into temptation, 3 Ne. 18: 15, 18 (D&C 20: 33; 31: 12; 61: 39). Beware of pride, lest thou shouldst enter into temptation, D&C 23: 1. Adam became subject to the will of the devil because he yielded to temptation, D&C 29: 39-40. I was left to all kinds of temptations, JS-H 1: 28. GS Testimony I know that my redeemer liveth, Job 19: 25-26. Be not ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, 2 Tim. 1: 8. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy, Rev. 19: 10. Stand as witnesses of God at all times, Mosiah 18: 9. There was no way to reclaim the people save by bearing down in pure testimony against them, Alma 4: 19-20. I have all things as a testimony that these things are true, Alma 30: 41-44. Ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith, Ether 12: 6. Did I not speak peace to your mind? What greater witness can you have than from God? D&C 6: 22-23. And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony which we give of him, D&C 76: 22-24. I sent you out to testify and warn the people, D&C 88: 81-82. The testators are now dead, and their testament is in force, D&C 135: 4-5. Enoch beheld angels bearing testimony of the Father and Son, Moses 7: 27. Though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true, JS-H 1: 24-25. GS Unbelief He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief, Matt. 13: 58. Because of their unbelief Jesus’ disciples could not cast out a devil, Matt. 17: 14-21. Help thou mine unbelief, Mark 9: 23-24. Jesus upbraided his Apostles with their unbelief and hardness of heart, Mark 16: 14. Shall unbelief make the faith of God without effect? Rom. 3: 3. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief, 1 Ne. 4: 13. When the time cometh that they dwindle in unbelief, he will cause them to be scattered and smitten, 2 Ne. 1: 10-11 (D&C 3: 18). Because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God, Mosiah 26: 1-5. I could not show unto the Jews so great miracles, because of their unbelief, 3 Ne. 19: 35. Your minds in times past have been darkened because of unbelief, D&C 84: 54-58. GS Unity It is good for brethren to dwell together in unity, Ps. 133: 1. I and my Father are one, John 10: 30 (D&C 50: 43). Jesus prayed that all may be one as he and his Father are one, John 17: 11-23 (3 Ne. 19: 23). I beseech you that there be no divisions among you, but that ye be perfectly joined together, 1 Cor. 1: 10. Be determined in one mind and in one heart, united in all things, 2 Ne. 1: 21. Saints should have their hearts knit together in unity, Mosiah 18: 21. Jesus prayed for unity among his Nephite disciples, 3 Ne. 19: 23. The disciples were united in mighty prayer and fasting, 3 Ne. 27: 1. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are one, D&C 20: 27-28 (D&C 35: 2; 50: 43). It is your duty to unite with the true church, D&C 23: 7. Whatsoever ye shall ask in faith, being united in prayer, ye shall receive, D&C 29: 6. If ye are not one ye are not mine, D&C 38: 27. The Lord called his people Zion because they were of one heart and one mind, Moses 7: 18. GS Witness Thou shalt not bear false witness, Ex. 20: 16. The gospel will be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, Matt. 24: 14 (JS-M 1: 31). Ye shall be witnesses unto me, Acts 1: 8. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, Rom. 8: 16 (1 Jn. 5: 6). Ye are willing to stand as witnesses of God at all times, Mosiah 18: 8-9. We partake of the sacrament to witness unto the Father that we will keep the commandments and always remember Jesus, 3 Ne. 18: 10-11 (Moro. 4, 5; D&C 20: 77-79). We receive no witness until after the trial of your faith, Ether 12: 6. Law of witnesses: in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established, D&C 6: 28 (Deut. 17: 6; Matt. 18: 16; 2 Cor. 13: 1; Ether 5: 4; D&C 128: 3). I have ordained you to be Apostles and especial witnesses of my name, D&C 27: 12 (D&C 107: 23). The Seventy are called to be especial witnesses unto the Gentiles and in all the world, D&C 107: 25. Let there be a recorder, and let him be eye-witness of your baptisms, D&C 127: 6 (D&C 128: 2-4). BD Abraham Abraham is always regarded in the O.T. as founder of the covenant race, which is personified in the house of Israel. He is the “father of the faithful.” John the Baptist and Paul rebuked those holding the erroneous idea that natural descent from Abraham was by itself sufficient to secure God’s favor (Matt. 3: 9; Rom. 9: 7). For references to him in Jesus’ teachings see Matt. 8: 11; Luke 16: 22; John 8: 56. BD Adoption There are two types of adoption spoken of in the scriptures. A person who is of non-Israelite lineage becomes a member of the house of Israel through faith in Jesus Christ when it is accompanied by baptism in water and the reception of the Holy Ghost. In addition, all candidates for the fulness of salvation are accounted as sons and daughters of Jesus Christ, being his children by obedience to the gospel (Mosiah 5: 7-8). Although the word adoption is not actually used by John the Baptist, he taught the concept as recorded in Matt. 3: 9 and Luke 3: 8 (compare JST). See also Rom. 8: 15-17; Gal. 4: 5-7; Eph. 1: 5; Abr. 2: 10. BD Atonement The word describes the setting “at one” of those who have been estranged, and denotes the reconciliation of man to God. Sin is the cause of the estrangement, and therefore the purpose of atonement is to correct or overcome the consequences of sin. From the time of Adam to the death of Jesus Christ, true believers were instructed to offer animal sacrifices to the Lord. These sacrifices were symbolic of the forthcoming death of Jesus Christ, and were done by faith in him (Moses 5: 5-8). BD Atonement Jesus Christ, as the Only Begotten Son of God and the only sinless person to live on this earth, was the only one capable of making an atonement for mankind. By his selection and foreordination in the Grand Council before the world was formed, his divine Sonship, his sinless life, the shedding of his blood in the garden of Gethsemane, his death on the cross and subsequent bodily resurrection from the grave, he made a perfect atonement for all mankind. All are covered unconditionally as pertaining to the fall of Adam. Hence, all shall rise from the dead with immortal bodies, because of Jesus’ atonement. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Cor. 15: 22), and all little children are innocent at birth. The atonement is conditional, however, so far as each person’s individual sins are concerned, and touches every one to the degree that he has faith in Jesus Christ, repents of his sins, and obeys the gospel. The services of the Day of Atonement foreshadowed the atoning work of Christ (Lev. 4; Lev. 23: 26-32; Heb. 9). The scriptures point out that no law, ordinance, or sacrifice would be satisfactory if it were not for the atonement of Jesus Christ (Heb. 10: 1-9; 2 Ne. 9: 5-24; Mosiah 13: 27-32). BD Baptism From a Greek word meaning to dip or immerse. Baptism in water is the introductory ordinance of the gospel, and must be followed by baptism of the Spirit in order to be complete. As one of the ordinances of the gospel, it is associated with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, and the laying on hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Baptism has always been practiced whenever the gospel of Jesus Christ has been on the earth and has been taught by men holding the holy priesthood who could administer the ordinances. Although there is some obscurity in the Bible as to the antiquity of baptism before the time of Jesus, from latter-day revelation it is clear that Adam was baptized (Moses 6: 64-68) and that the patriarchs and prophets since his time have taught the gospel and administered the ordinances that pertain to the gospel. This includes both water baptism and the laying on of hands for the Holy Ghost (Moses 8: 23-24). The Book of Mormon shows also that baptism was taught and practiced long before the coming of Jesus Christ (2 Ne. 31; Mosiah 18: 8-17). In the N.T. Paul speaks of the children of Israel being baptized by Moses “in the cloud and in the sea” (1 Cor. 10: 1-4). Noah and Abraham are spoken of as “preachers of righteousness,” which means they taught the gospel and administered its ordinances (Gal. 3: 8; Heb. 4: 1-2; 2 Pet. 2: 5; cf. Moses 8: 23-24). BD Canon A word of Greek origin, originally meaning “a rod for testing straightness,” now used to denote the authoritative collection of the sacred books used by the true believers in Christ. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the canonical books are called standard works. The history of the process by which the books of the Bible were collected and recognized as a sacred authority is almost hidden in obscurity. There are several legends extant and these may have some truth in them, but certainly are not complete or totally accurate. Though many of the details have not been preserved, we know that the servants of the Lord have been commanded to keep records even from the earliest times, and that those records have been revered by the faithful and handed down from generation to generation. BD Christ Jesus, who is called Christ, is the firstborn of the Father in the spirit and the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is Jehovah, and was foreordained to his great calling in the Grand Councils before the world was. He was born of Mary at Bethlehem, lived a sinless life, and wrought out a perfect atonement for all mankind by the shedding of his blood and his death on the cross. He rose from the grave and brought to pass the bodily resurrection of every living thing and the salvation and exaltation of the faithful. BD Confession The scriptures use confession in at least two ways. One is to confess that Jesus is the Christ; that is, a confession or profession of faith; see, for example, Matt. 10: 32; Matt. 16: 16; John 6: 68-69; John 12: 42; Rom. 10: 9; Philip. 2: 11; 1 Tim. 6: 12; Heb. 4: 14; 1 Jn. 4: 2. A second usage of confession is confession of sin. It is a duty of all persons to confess all their sins to the Lord and, when necessary, to the person or persons sinned against. Sins against the public must be publicly confessed (D&C 42: 88-93). Other items may be confessed to a church official (bishop), or in many cases to the Lord alone. Confession to a church official (in most cases the bishop) is necessary whenever one’s transgression is of a nature for which the Church might impose loss of membership or other disciplinary action. The bishop cannot and does not forgive sin, but he may judge the matter and waive the penalty that the Church might otherwise impose against the person. The repentant sinner must still make confession and obtain forgiveness of the Lord.=Confession is a condition of forgiveness. The Lord has said that true repentance is always accompanied by confession (D&C 58: 43; D&C 64: 7). Confession was clearly a requirement of forgiveness under the law of Moses (Lev. 5: 5; Lev. 26: 40; Num. 5: 7; Josh. 7: 19; Ezra 10: 11). John the Baptist baptized those who repented and confessed their sins (Matt. 3: 5-6). BD Conversion Denotes changing one’s views, in a conscious acceptance of the will of God (Acts 3: 19). If followed by continued faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism in water for the remission of sins, and the reception of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, conversion will become complete, and will change a natural man into a sanctified, born again, purified person - a new creature in Christ Jesus (see 2 Cor. 5: 17). Complete conversion comes after many trials and much testing (see Luke 22: 32; D&C 112: 12-13). To labor for the conversion of one’s self and others is a noble task, as in Ps. 51: 13; Dan. 12: 3; James 5: 19-20; D&C 18: 15-16. Cf. Alma 26. BD Devil Since the devil and his premortal angels have no physical body of flesh and bones, they often seek to possess the bodies of mortal beings. There are many such instances recorded in scripture (Matt. 9: 32; Matt. 12: 22; Mark 1: 24; Mark 5: 7; Luke 8: 30; Acts 19: 15; cf. Mosiah 3: 6). Such can be evicted by the power of faith in Jesus Christ and the exercise of the holy priesthood. Jesus gave this power to his disciples (Matt. 10: 1; Mark 16: 17; Luke 10: 17; Acts 5: 16; D&C 84: 67). BD Devil He is miserable in his situation, and “stirreth up the children of men unto secret combinations of murder and all manner of secret works of darkness” (2 Ne. 9: 9). He tries to imitate the work of God by transforming himself nigh unto an angel of light (2 Cor. 11: 12-15; 2 Ne. 9: 9; D&C 128: 20). He is also a worker of miracles, by which he deceives many upon the earth (Rev. 13: 1-15). In fact, the scripture says he deceives the whole world (Rev. 12: 9). He can cite scripture to make his point seem plausible (Matt. 4: 1-11). All of this is his scheme to make man miserable like himself. Protection against the influence of the devil is found by obedience to the commandments and laws of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The message of all the prophets and apostles is that truth, righteousness, and peace shall in the end prevail over error, sin, and war; the faithful shall triumph over all their afflictions and enemies, and shall triumph over the devil. There shall be a complete and lasting victory of righteousness over wickedness on this earth, which will be done by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. BD Election We see that elections are not all of the same kind. Since election has to do with God’s choice of persons or groups to accomplish his purposes, some may be elected by him to one thing and some to another. Although the Lord uses certain individuals to accomplish his purposes, it does not necessarily follow that these persons will automatically receive a fulness of salvation thereby. For instance, Nebuchadnezzar and Cyrus fulfilled certain purposes in the economy of God, but they apparently did it for their own reasons and not as conscious acts of faith and righteousness. On the other hand, salvation of one’s soul comes only by personal integrity and willing obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus there are some elections to be desired over others. An “election of grace” spoken of in D&C 84: 98-102 and Rom. 11: 1-5 has reference to one’s situation in mortality; that is, being born at a time, at a place, and in circumstances where one will come in favorable contact with the gospel. This election took place in the premortal existence. Those who are faithful and diligent in the gospel in mortality receive an even more desirable election in this life, and become the elect of God. These receive the promise of a fulness of God’s glory in eternity (D&C 84: 33-41). BD Faith Faith is to hope for things which are not seen, but which are true (Heb. 11: 1; Alma 32: 21), and must be centered in Jesus Christ in order to produce salvation. To have faith is to have confidence in something or someone. The Lord has revealed himself and his perfect character, possessing in their fulness all the attributes of love, knowledge, justice, mercy, unchangeableness, power, and every other needful thing, so as to enable the mind of man to place confidence in him without reservation. Faith is kindled by hearing the testimony of those who have faith (Rom. 10: 14-17). Miracles do not produce faith but strong faith is developed by obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ; in other words, faith comes by righteousness, although miracles often confirm one’s faith. BD Faith All true faith must be based upon correct knowledge or it cannot produce the desired results. Faith in Jesus Christ is the first principle of the gospel and is more than belief, since true faith always moves its possessor to some kind of physical and mental action; it carries an assurance of the fulfillment of the things hoped for. A lack of faith leads one to despair, which comes because of iniquity. BD Faith Although faith is a gift, it must be cultured and sought after until it grows from a tiny seed to a great tree. The effects of true faith in Jesus Christ include (1) an actual knowledge that the course of life one is pursuing is acceptable to the Lord (see Heb. 11: 4); (2) a reception of the blessings of the Lord that are available to man in this life; and (3) an assurance of personal salvation in the world to come. These things involve individual and personal testimony, guidance, revelation, and spiritual knowledge. Where there is true faith there are miracles, visions, dreams, healings, and all the gifts of God that he gives to his saints. Jesus pointed out some obstacles to faith in John 5: 44 and John 12: 39-42 (cf. James 1: 6-8). BD Firstborn The faithful saints were made members of the Church of the Firstborn in eternity, since they receive through Jesus Christ the inheritance of the firstborn (D&C 93: 21-22). Joseph, though not the firstborn of Jacob, received the inheritance as though he were the firstborn (1 Chr. 5: 1-2), as also did Ephraim (Gen. 48; Jer. 31: 9). BD Grace It is through the grace of the Lord Jesus, made possible by his atoning sacrifice, that mankind will be raised in immortality, every person receiving his body from the grave in a condition of everlasting life. It is likewise through the grace of the Lord that individuals, through faith in the atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance of their sins, receive strength and assistance to do good works that they otherwise would not be able to maintain if left to their own means. This grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold on eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best efforts. BD Heaven This term has several meanings in the scriptures. It is first of all the place where God lives and the future home of the saints (Gen. 28: 12; Ps. 11: 4; Matt. 6: 9). It also means the expanse around the earth, as the heavens (Gen. 1: 1, 17; Ex. 24: 10). It is usually thought of as being “up,” or above the earth (cf. Alma 18: 30-32). In the sense of being God’s home and the ultimate place for the faithful, it is clearly distinguished from paradise, which is the temporary abode of the faithful spirits of persons who have lived and died on this earth. Jesus visited paradise after his death on the cross, but on the third day thereafter, he informed Mary that he had not yet been to the Father (see Luke 23: 39-44; John 20: 17). BD John the Baptist While in prison, John sent two of his disciples to inquire of Jesus to reassure their faith. Many have thought this event reflected a lack of confidence in John’s own mind. However, Jesus took the occasion to bear testimony of the great work John had done, emphasizing that he was unwavering and true (see Luke 7: 24-28). Jesus also pointed out that John had fulfilled the prophecy of Mal. 3: 1. Jesus praised John as a prophet, saying there is none who was greater (Luke 5: 33-35). This greatness consisted of his unique privileges and the quality of his work. He alone was entrusted with the mission of preparing the way and baptizing the Savior of the world. He “did no miracle” (John 10: 41), but magnificently fulfilled his assignment in bearing testimony of Jesus Christ. Jesus characterized John as “a burning and a shining light” (John 5: 35). After nearly a year in prison, John was beheaded at the instigation of Herodias (Matt. 14: 3 ff.; Mark 6: 17). BD John, Epistles of The first epistle emphasizes that Jesus has come in the flesh, and shows its bearing on the life of men. It was probably written after the Gospel, for it assumes in the reader a knowledge of the facts that the Gospel records. It also contains warnings against the dangers that beset a true faith in the literal incarnation of Jesus even before the end of the first century, both from teachers who claimed in authority independent of our Lord’s in the revelation of truth and from teachers who refused to acknowledge a real manifestation of the Godhead in human flesh. BD Law of Moses The name assigned to the whole collection of written laws given through Moses to the house of Israel, as a replacement of the higher law that they had failed to obey. The law of Moses consisted of many ceremonies, rituals, and symbols, to remind the people frequently of their duties and responsibilities. It included a law of carnal commandments and performances, added to the basic laws of the gospel. Faith, repentance, baptism in water, and remission of sins were part of the law, as were also the Ten Commandments. Although inferior to the fulness of the gospel, there were many provisions in the law of Moses of high ethical and moral value that were equal to the divine laws of any dispensation. The law of carnal commandments and much of the ceremonial law was fulfilled at the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The law functioned under the Aaronic Priesthood and was a preparatory gospel to bring its adherents to Christ. See JST Ex. 34: 1-2; Rom. 3: 20; Gal. 3: 19, 24; Eph. 2: 14-16; Heb. 7: 11, 18-19; Heb. 9: 7-14; 2 Ne. 25: 24-30; Mosiah 12: 27 to 13: 32; 3 Ne. 9: 17; 3 Ne. 15: 1-8; D&C 84: 23-27. BD Messiah Throughout the Apocrypha there is no reference to the hope of the Messiah, though during the century before the birth of Christ the hope was steadily reviving. But many Jews, as we learn from the Gospels, were looking only for a deliverer from the Roman power and for greater national prosperity; so when the Messiah came, the nation as a whole rejected him. Only the faithful were able to see in Jesus of Nazareth the true Suffering Servant of Isa. 53, as well as the true Prophet, Priest, and King of Israel (Matt. 16: 16; Luke 24: 21, 26, 27; John 4: 25-26; Acts 3: 18; Acts 8: 32-35; Acts 17: 3; Acts 26: 23). BD Miracles An important element in the work of Jesus Christ, being not only divine acts, but forming also a part of the divine teaching. Christianity is founded on the greatest of all miracles, the resurrection of our Lord. If that be admitted, other miracles cease to be improbable. Miracles should not be regarded as deviations from the ordinary course of nature so much as manifestations of divine or spiritual power. Some lower law was in each case superseded by the action of the higher. They were intended to be a proof to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ (Matt. 11: 4-5; John 2: 11; John 10: 25; John 20: 30-31). Many of them were also parabolic and instructive, teaching by means of symbols such divine truths as the result of sin and the cure of sin; the value of faith; the curse of impurity; and the law of love. The miracles of healing also show how the law of love is to deal with the actual facts of life. Miracles were and are a response to faith, and its best encouragement. They were never wrought without prayer, felt need, and faith. BD Miracles Miracles are a part of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If miracles cease it is because faith has ceased. See Mark 6: 5-6; Morm. 9: 10-20; Ether 12: 12. BD Noah The patriarch; son of Lamech (Gen. 5: 29-32). When he was 10 years old, Noah was ordained to the priesthood by Methuselah (D&C 107: 52). He became a preacher of righteousness and declared the gospel of Jesus Christ, even as Enoch, teaching faith, repentance, baptism, and the reception of the Holy Ghost (2 Pet. 2: 5; Moses 8: 19, 23-24). His life was sought by unbelievers, but he was preserved by the power of God (Moses 8: 18, 26). He and his sons Japheth, Shem, and Ham, and their wives, making eight in all, were saved from the flood by the ark they had built at the command of God (Gen. 6 - 8; Heb. 11: 7; 1 Pet. 3: 20). We learn from latter-day revelation that Noah is also the angel Gabriel (HC 3: 386). BD Parables (1) Most teachers, especially Oriental teachers, have used some form of parable in their instruction, but none so exclusively as Jesus at one period of his ministry. During part of the Galilean ministry the record states that “without a parable spake he not unto them” (Mark 4: 34). From our Lord’s words (Matt. 13: 13-15; Mark 4: 12; Luke 8: 10) we learn the reason for this method. It was to veil the meaning. The parable conveys to the hearer religious truth exactly in proportion to his faith and intelligence; to the dull and uninspired it is a mere story, “seeing they see not,” while to the instructed and spiritual it reveals the mysteries or secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Thus it is that the parable exhibits the condition of all true knowledge. Only he who seeks finds. BD Pauline Epistles b. The faith of Abraham; faith in Jesus Christ enables believers to become Abraham's seed (Gal. 3: 1-29). BD Pauline Epistles 3. Jesus is greater than Moses. Moses was a faithful servant, but Jesus was a faithful son (Heb. 3: 1-6). BD Peter Peter was one of the greatest of men. It is true that the N.T. recounts some mortal weaknesses, but it also illustrates that he overcame them and was made strong by his faith in Jesus Christ. The Lord honored Peter by selecting him to hold the keys of the kingdom on earth (Matt. 16: 13-18), and it was upon the holy mount that Peter received these keys from the Savior, Moses, and Elias (Elijah) (Matt. 17: 1-12). Peter was the chief apostle of his day; and after the death, resurrection, and ascension of the Savior, it was Peter who called the Church together and acted in the office of his calling as the one who possessed the keys of the priesthood (Acts 1: 2). It was through Peter’s ministry that the gospel was first opened up to the gentiles (Acts 10 - 11). BD Prophet The work of a Hebrew prophet was to act as God’s messenger and make known God’s will. The message was usually prefaced with the words “Thus saith Jehovah.” He taught men about God’s character, showing the full meaning of his dealings with Israel in the past. It was therefore part of the prophetic office to preserve and edit the records of the nation’s history; and such historical books as Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Sam., 1 and 2 Kings were known by the Jews as the former Prophets. It was also the prophet’s duty to denounce sin and foretell its punishment, and to redress, so far as he could, both public and private wrongs. He was to be, above all, a preacher of righteousness. When the people had fallen away from a true faith in Jehovah, the prophets had to try to restore that faith and remove false views about the character of God and the nature of the Divine requirement. In certain cases prophets predicted future events, e.g., there are the very important prophecies announcing the coming of Messiah’s kingdom; but as a rule prophet was a forthteller rather than a foreteller. In a general sense a prophet is anyone who has a testimony of Jesus Christ by the Holy Ghost, as in Num. 11: 25-29; Rev. 19: 10. BD Revelation The English word revelation is translated from a Greek word apocalypse, meaning to make known or uncover. This is in contrast to apocrypha, which connotes covered or concealed. Divine revelation is one of the grandest concepts and principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for without it, man could not know of the things of God and could not be saved with any degree of salvation in the eternities. Continuous revelation from God to his saints, through the Holy Ghost or by other means, such as vision, dreams, or visitations, makes possible daily guidance along true paths and leads the faithful soul to complete and eternal salvation in the celestial kingdom. The principle of gaining knowledge by revelation is the principle of salvation. It is the making known of divine truth by communication with the heavens, and consists not only of revelation of the plan of salvation to the Lord’s prophets, but also a confirmation in the hearts of the believers that the revelation to the prophets is true. It also consists of individual guidance for every person who seeks for it and follows the prescribed course of faith, repentance, and obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ. “The Holy Ghost is a revelator,” said Joseph Smith, and “no man can receive the Holy Ghost without receiving revelations” (HC 6: 58). Without revelation, all would be guesswork, darkness, and confusion. BD Seed of Abraham The heirs of the promises and covenants made to Abraham, and obtained only by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Men and women become heirs by faithfulness to covenant obligations whether they are literally of Abraham’s lineage or by adoption. See Gal. 3: 26-29; Gal. 4: 1-7; D&C 84: 34; D&C 103: 17; D&C 132: 30; Abr. 2: 9-11. Literal seed may also lose their blessings by disobedience, as in Rom. 9: 6-8. Cf. JST Matt. 3: 36-37; JST Luke 3: 13-14. BD Temple From Adam to the time of Jesus, ordinances were performed in temples for the living only. After Jesus opened the way for the gospel to be preached in the world of spirits, ceremonial work for the dead, as well as for the living, has been done in temples on the earth by faithful members of the Church. Building and properly using a temple is one of the marks of the true Church in any dispensation, and is especially so in the present day. JST James 2: 1 1 My brethren, ye cannot have the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, and yet have respect to persons. JST Rev. 1: 1-8 5 Therefore, I, John, the faithful witness, bear record of the things which were delivered me of the angel, and from Jesus Christ the first begotten of the dead, and the Prince of the kings of the earth.
