David Sutcliffe è nato a Saskatoon (Canada) ed ha partecipato a vari telefilm di successo come “Friends”,”Will & Grace” e “C.S.I.”.In “Una mamma per amica” interpreta Chris Hayden,il padre di Rory.Nonostante non si sia assunto le sue responsabilità di padre lasciando crescere Rory senza la figura di un padre,Chris mantiene buoni rapporti con Lorelai ma mentre sembra che i due si possano rimettere insieme per ristabilire un’armonia familiare,Chris viene raggiunto dalla notizia che la sua fidanzata,con la quale era in freddo,aspetta un bambino.Per non commettere lo stesso errore fatto con Rory,Chris decide di ritornare dalla sua fidanzata per veder nascere il suo secondo figlio.
